Well the sound for the buck has been the age old question for the longest time to be honest. I am a rue believer in Sony always have been always will be. I have learned threw the years though if you stick with one name threw out the whole system you get way better sound quality. Instead of one name brand for the deck another name for the amp etc… You get the point. Get on ebay if your looking for a deal someone always on there trying to get rid of a system.

i think it’s possible to put together a decent system, that you’ll be fairly happy with. you won’t be getting the “best” of anything, however i think i can point you in a direction you’ll be happy with.

you can get a good headunit in your price range but between wiring, the amp and the subs, your lookin at around $400 for decent subs

A few things
1) A 97 escort doesn’t have a premium sound system (especially if it only came with an AM/FM radio, so do yourself a favor and replace the interior speakers. You’ll thank yourself later. Adding a subwoofer and Head Unit to ‘not so good’ factory speakers really let you hear how bad they sound
2) Since you don’t listen to rap, and you listen to rock, a smaller subwoofer would probably do you better, because it would provide crisper bass response - something you’d need for rock music
3) I would suggest getting a basstube for your subs - that way, you get the tube which has the sub and the amp, and it is already assembled.http://www.crutchfield.com/S-0RqqcPENoCG…
for your CD player, I would suggest something simple that has that capability to read MP3 CD’s as well as having an input for an ipod (even if you don’t use either of the two, trust me - they will come in handy)http://www.crutchfield.com/S-0RqqcPENoCG…
and for your speakers, you probably wouldn’t need an amp, but it would REALLY be in your best interest to replace them. Nothing major, but trust me - you’ll regret it later if you don’t
