Be willing to walk away. When I bought my new car, I went back and forth with the dealer for hours... I told them to bring me a printout of the current bluebook value (what they had to pay in order to get the car on their lot). Of course they have to make some sort of profit, so you can only use this tool so much. Just make sure you know your position - YOU are the customer, and you'd be happy to take your business elsewhere if they can't appease you. For instance, with my car, I wanted some heavy duty mats to put on the floor... I told them I wasn't going to buy the car unless they gave me the floor mats - when they refused, I got up and started walking out... you better believe they jumped up to stop me! Don't ever feel bad for a salesperson or a car company and give them any more of your hard earned money than they deserve. Be stubborn, and once again, just be willing to walk away :)

One of these answers was the stupidest I've seen in a while.
#1 thing you can do is comparison shop and walk away.
Get a price, and go to the next place and see what they can do. Eventually after enough research, you can go in with a pre-approved check in hand and tell them what you are willing to pay.
If you don't know in your head ahead of time what is a good deal, you'll get screwed like 85% of the population does. I'm always amazed how little research is done buy auto buyers.

They hand out freebies more than they cut prices now. Just get enough free bonuses to save a lot of money. Like 100 free oil changes, free premium sound system, free maintenance for a year. Stuff like that. As far as the price goes, there is always at LEAST a 15% markup and if you can actually talk them down 15% then you're doing magic because you're taking away almost all of their commission.
